Slow travel in Asturias: a journey that refuses to hurry

The fast pace of modern life

It’s no secret that, in the last decades, the pace of life has been getting faster and faster. This rush to do everything has invaded every area of our lives, from work —where it might be more understandable, due to the demands and competitiveness we face— to our holidays.

Tourism has become, rather than a pleasurable activity, a checklist of places to visit, photograph and cross off. A dangerous trend, considering it’s the only time we can really slow down.

In contrast to this rush, a movement emerged that defends quite the opposite: slow travel.

What is slow travel?

Slow travel is a movement that emerged in the 1980s, as a response to the accelerated pace of modern life in big cities.

The concept revolves around the idea of not travelling with a destination in mind, but enjoying the journey itself. From leaving home to coming back, every moment can be enjoyed by a slow traveller.

The benefits of travelling slowly

Among its benefits are reduced anxiety and worries, and a deeper connection with local culture.

Why Asturias is perfect for slow travel

Asturias is the perfect region for this kind of travel: accommodation far from crowds, nature at its purest, and villages that preserve their traditions. Everything invites you to take it slow.

A slow travel experience at Villa Palatina

At Villa Palatina, we want to offer you a 100% slow travel experience.

We are located in Paladín, Las Regueras. Here, far enough from the city noise, nature embraces you. When you look out the window, you won’t see bricks, but trees —and you’ll wake up to the murmur of the river flowing just beneath your window.

In the morning, you can wake up slowly, at your own pace, and come down to enjoy a homemade breakfast —maybe in our dining room, warmed by the heating, or on our terrace, overlooking the landscape.

Once you’re fully awake, you can take a walk through the forest and discover the native species of this region. You’ll probably greet and chat with a few neighbours, who can tell you abou  t hidden spots only locals know. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a fair or local festivity —very common in rural Asturias, especially in summer.

Slow travel through food

And of course, when you get hungry, you can savour true Asturian cuisine —either at our place or in one of the many nearby restaurants.

Because sometimes, the best part of a trip is when time stands still.

We’re waiting for you at Villa Palatina, ready to offer you a weekend of total relaxation.
